I didn't post after yesterdays class, so here is a belated post!
We had a chance to look at a trailer for a film on copyright laws in class today, and it got me thinking about copyright and how I feel about sharing created material. It is interesting to me that the technology that allows artists to disseminate their art to millions of people, fueling their popularity, which can lead to these artists earning millions of dollars in ticket sales, etc. also has allowed people to share videos, music and images freely. I understand that artists want to be able to make money out of their work, but I also understand the desire on behalf of regular people to view, share and change the media created by these artists. I mean it is so easy to do!
For me the biggest challenge going forward with copyright law is going to be finding a balance between the wishes of artists to make a profit off their work, and the fact that the general population wants free access to the media. The reason that a solution is neccessary is because the media is already being shared! It is impossible, because of the reality of the technologies now available, to stop that media from being shared, used and changed by people, so why criminalize it? A more creative solution than one which fines or imprisons people is neccessary.
I finished my story boards for ACT I of "Romeo and Juliet" and started filming! It is going to take a lot of frames to get through ACT I so I may not get much further than that. The project may have to change a little!
